DEFINITION OF FLOATATION THERAPY:
Floatation therapy offers people the chance of regaining
physical, emotional or psychological health. We are all aware of the importance
of a healthy body. Many of us now visit a gym or take some other form of
exercise regularly. Healthy eating has now become a way of life for many
people, as we are increasingly made aware of the importance of diet and
exercise in maintaining health.
We all need a healthy body to live life to its potential but what about the
mind?
We should all set time aside to relax naturally just as we
should to exercise. For more and more people it is easier to come to a
dedicated centre for relaxation, at Seashores we provide you with an
environment conducive to successful relaxation, rejuvenation and healing. As
well as relaxation there are numerous medical benefits of Floatation therapy.
Remember the mind is extremely powerful and a healthy mind is just as important
as a healthy body without natural relaxation all those hours at the gym can be
wasted.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF FLOATATION THERAPY:
Floating helps to stimulate the body’s own powers of healing and
regeneration and maintains homeostasis within the body, strengthening the body’s
resistance to the effects of stress, illness and injury. The effects of floating
are cumulative – every time you float you strengthen your body’s resistance.
Medical conditions which have been shown to benefit from
floatation therapy include:
- Arthritis
- Pre menstrual tension
- Post natal depression
- Asthma
- Addictions to drugs, alcohol and smoking
- Back pain
- Depression
- Chronic pain and fatigue
- Jet lag
- Enhanced recovery from illness
- Musculo-skeletal and rheumatic conditions
- Irritable bowl syndrome
- Gastric ulcers
- High blood pressure
- Insomnia
- Migraine
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Stress
- Psoriasis and other skin conditions
- Cardiovascular conditions
FITNESS & SPORTS TRAINING:
Floatation Therapy maximises the benefits of fitness training
and workouts. In the words of Jeff Bond head psychologist of the Australian
Institute of Sport ( which has been using tanks to train their Olympic squad
since 1983.)
:
‘The floatation tank represents a new dimension in sports
training for the elite athlete.’
How? High intensity exercise stimulates the muscles to
grow but the actual growth takes place during relaxation, approximately 30–40
hours post-exercise. Deep relaxation in the floatation tank causes a decrease in
the electrical activity in the muscles. Circulation is improved and muscle
tension is released. This accelerates growth and regeneration of the muscles.
10 QUESTIONS ABOUT FLOATING
:
- What is the tank made of?
The Floatation tank is a fibreglass capsule containing water to a depth of 25cm
(10") treated with a very high concentration of Epsom salts. The
resultant high density allows your body to float naturally and spontaneously
without effort. Even your head floats – the centre of buoyancy and the centre of
gravity of the head are in about the same place so you can tilt your head back
comfortably without fear of sinking.
- How long does it take?
The
session at SEASHORES lasts 60 minutes but we can be flexible – if you require a
longer or shorter float just let us know when you call to book. Please come 10
minute prior to your first float so we can explain about the tank and answer any
queries. We also give you showering time before and after the float so you can
dry your hair and have a complimentary drink.
- Can floating really change my
life?
There is a growing movement towards natural solutions that
counteract the stresses of modern life. The benefits of floating are natural,
long-term and cumulative. Every time you float you reinforce the health benefits
of the relaxation response.
- Won't I be claustrophobic?
No you won't. You are in complete control of
your surroundings and can float in the light or dark or even with the lid open.
There is no feeling of being in a tight space. Claustrophobia is normally a
problem when you are not in control of your surroundings.
- Will my skin become
wrinkled?
No. The water contains high salt levels, which leaves your skin
soft and silky.
- How is water hygiene maintained?
We adhere to strict hygiene regulations the water
contains salt and a balance of chemicals to keep it sterile and the levels are
checked daily. Between each session the water is thoroughly filtered and the
inside of the tank sprayed with the solution maintaining hygiene.
- What do I do in the floatation tank?
Nothing at all!
Floating automatically induces deep relaxation and all the wonderful benefits
associated with this – you don’t need to learn any new techniques. The time
passes very quickly and you may day dream or drift off to sleep
- What if I fall asleep?
Some people do fall asleep. The
salt in the water keeps you afloat so there is no chance of you turning over or
sinking. We may play some gentle music, which will gradually get
louder to wake you. If this fails we can even automatically open the tank door
and switch the lights on to wake you up.
- How often should I float?
The natural reaction triggered in the floatation tank is reinforced each time
you float. Regular floating benefits the body because you learn to relax
quicker. We always recommend you float 3–5 times to get fully
acclimatised to the tank and get maximum benefit. If you are unsure we are there
to give advice so please ask.
- Is It private?
Yes. You
are shown into your own private room, which has a shower for use before and
after the session. The door to the tank does not lock it can be easily pushed open
so you will never get trapped inside.
